The Brightwater Vineyard is situated 15km from the coast and is sheltered from the south by the Richmond Ranges. The “soil” is a combination of rocks and boulders which is very hard on the farm equipment, but vital for holding the warmth of Nelson’s sun, and for ripening the grapes.
Gewürztraminer is an early ripening variety with an aromatic, fragrant bouquet. It is naturally a low yielding vine which can produce wonderful concentration and flavour. After picking, the grapes had a period of skin contact before gentle pressing. The juice was cold settled for 24 hours before being racked and inoculated for ferment. Cool temperatures were maintained throughout fermentation before stopping the fermentation prematurely to retain a little natural sugar. This single vineyard wine was stabilised and bottled in July 2013.
2013 was a light year overall for Nelson. The Gewürztraminer had a moderate crop which achieved good ripeness and was harvested in early April in superb condition.
Our 2013 Winemakers Collection Gewürztraminer has an elegant spicy nose with dominant fragrant characters. Spring daphne, blossoms and crystallised ginger notes are clear on the nose. The palate has defined floral and spicy notes, and a distinctive Turkish Delight character. The finish is off-dry with well managed phenolics building the palate.
